This is the old trick through which you can change the name of Recycle Bin to your choice like “My Dustbin”, “My Aching Stomach” etc and yeah you can also delete it from desktop although its not necessary.

The simple steps taken to Rename the Recycle Bin are:-

1. Goto Start->Run and type in Regedit and press enter.
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
3. Open the ShellFolder folder.

Another Procedure to Rename the Recycle Bin

1. Goto Start->Run and type in Regedit and press enter.
2. Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/ShellNoRoam/           MUICache
3. In the right hand pane, double click the @C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll,-8964
4. Change the value to whatever you want.
5. Close Ok and close the regedit.
6. Refresh your desktop and see the changes on the name of Recycle Bin you wanted.

Now the simple steps taken to Remove the Recycle Bin from desktop are:-

1. Goto Start->Run and type in Gpedit.msc and press enter.
2. Navagate to USER CONFIGURATION >ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES >Click on DESKTOP.
3. On the right hand pane find ” Remove Recycle Bin icon on the desktop ” , double left click on it to ENABLE it.

Another procedure to remove the Recycle Bin.

1. Goto Start->Run and type in Regedit and press enter.
2. Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel.
3. In the right hand pane, right click select New-> Binary Value and name it {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.
4. Refresh the desktop and see the Recycle Bin disappear.
5. Note:- To bring back the Recycle Bin to desktop, delete the {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.

Note:- Sometimes it may take time to take effect. So keep refreshing till you see the changes.

You might be wondering what happen to me, why I am not posting from a quite few days. Ya that’s strange isn’t it. But before publishing any posts I wanted to share what happened with my blog. Really it was very scary.

Well I was doing some modification on my web hosting account on 24th April around 8 pm. While doing work on cpanel, I mistakenly hit the delete (remove) button of this blog. Oh my god, what the hell I did, my blog was gone, it was deleted. what I am going to do now. All my lovely posts and comments were gone. Dude I am screwed. My heart was beating fast; I was really scared what to do now. Then I thought of restoring my blog but how, is it possible to restore the deleted blog? Well that was tough question, I was asking myself.

Before going through the restoring process, I thought of my regular visitors, what will happen if they visit my blog and the blog doesn’t exist. Surely if they found out, they’ll never come back again. This was haunting me a lot. So idea caught me and I created a new blog within second in the same domain name through fantastico from cpanel and put the blog in the maintenance mode so that my dear regular visitors might think that I am going through some internal work on my blog but the truth was, you guys know that the blog was empty without any posts because the earlier blog was deleted, I did this just to save myself and reputation But Why am I revealing this, am I nerd, why am I making laugh of myself. No I am not, I am sharing this because it might also happen with you. This mistake can happen with anyone, If you experience this, then the steps taken by me might help you out, if you don’t know what path to follow because this mistake was not intentional, it was by chance.

Before going further, It’s better to tell you that this blog is powered by wordpress and hosted in ewebguru. So basically the wordpress users will be of more benefit.

Now let’s come to my blog saver process. Well that night itself on 24th April, I contacted one of the employer of my web hosting company through yahoo messenger and told him the whole story and he reassured me that the deleted blog can be restore. Wow I was happy. He told me to download the daily backup file through cpanel in my web hosting account and restored it, after that he went offline. I downloaded the daily backup file and tried to restore it but couldn’t follow the correct steps so it was hopeless to try without any help, I started googling, got many information through forums that blog deleted can be restored only through web hosting. Is it true, I really don’t know the answer yet.

I was having sleepless night. I couldn’t contact them on 25th April due to some work. So next day on 26th April, I contacted and he told me to upload the daily backup file through ftp account, I did that and he tried to restore it but hell it didn’t work, there was lot of error, now he guided me to upload the weekly backup, I did that also but that also didn’t work because weekly backup are taken on every Saturday morning since 26th was Saturday. it overwrite the existing files. So guys there was only one option left and that was the monthly backup. Monthly backup are normally taken on April 2 (it might change from web hosting company to company), so there was possibility and we did that and it work, the blog was restored to April 2 but what was the use of it because my blog was started on April 1 so no benefit of monthly backup.

My web hosting company tried every possible help but it didn’t work out. Still I was very disturbed because I couldn’t restore the current blog with all the posts. For a moment I tried to freshen myself, have a coke and went to friends room and enjoyed the day. In the evening I ask myself is there any more possibility, might be can’t say properly. I was having daily wordpress backup file, those who use wordpres they may know that wordpress have the backup facility. But I thought this might not help me because the size of the file was only143Kb

I thought of giving a try and you know what it really work for me. Here are the steps taken to restore my deleted blog.

1. I created a new wordpress blog in the same domain name and installed the same template which I was using when the blog was deleted. OK blog was created now. So how to bring my posts and comments back.
2. What I did is I opened the phpMyAdmin from cpanel.
3. There I selected the wordpress database and choose the Import tab.
4. Through Import tab, I uploaded the wordpress backup file of 23th april.
5. Bravo, I restored all my posts and comments of the blog.
6. But after restoring still there was a problem, all the posts and comments link was not working.
7. So again I took the help of my web hosting, they told me to change the property of .htaccess file to 777 and it work.
8. At last my blog was restored. Really it was horrible experience but I did learned a lot of new techniques through these whole struggle to restore the deleted blog.

I though that all of my subscribed readers number might decrease a lot but to my surprise it drop only by 25%. I thanks all the readers who still stick with my blog and all new visitors are always welcome to my blog.

What is the Need of Blogging?

Well I have already written a post on the Introduction to Basic Blogging. Let us see the broader use of blogging.

So what is blog?

If you have read my earlier post then you already know its answer anyway Blog in brief is normally defined as “online diary” or “journals”. Blogs are nowadays normally monetized and commercialized for feeding their appetite, that’s another thing; I will cover these stuffs later.

Why do We Blog and Are Blog Useful to us?

Blogging can be of anything, it’s about the author or writer behind the blog. Blog is a reflection of you and it is how it should be.

When you come to this site, it clearly states this is a place where I share my computing tips and tricks along with blogging tutorials for beginners and other stuffs with you.

My blog is reflection of me, I have full control over it, and I can do whatever I want. I don’t need to be liked, nor can I always express happiness.

Let me try and explain with an example How Blog are useful to us. I have come across many people who used to copy their notes, projects and other important data for future reference. They do things like

1. Note down in the notebook.

2. Zip it and send themself a mail.

3. Burn it in a CD., etc.

Whenever you learn something new or come across any new topic which you feel would be use in future then I suggest you to blog about it. Down the line in a year or so if you look back there would be decent collection of information’s which would be useful for you in future as well as for others.

Not only that, whatever you feel would be useful can be blog here rather than just adding it to your browsers favorites, bookmarking or scribbling it in a notepad. As this would be long lasting.

Other way to look at, it is almost always we learn most of the stuff from internet. Shouldn’t it be nice if we start giving back or contributing to it?

Don’t get me wrong. I am not talking only about technical bloggers. Even a non-techie guy can blog it.

Why do you (or don’t) blog?

Today I advice everyone I meet to blog. Sometimes it seems like I am a big mouth since I am only 1 year old in this blogging world.

But see in another way, it is an indication of the experience and value I have learned in this short period. It has been a wonderful learning journey and a lot of struggle but many of them with fruitful results.

There are lot of articles and posts about why one should blog, but believe me no one can tell you exactly what you will gain from it. It is you to realize it.

Let me mention some important points about why we should blog?

1. I have realized that writing on a particular topic helps me understand or think better and deeper, which is what I am doing as I am writing this.

2. Every blogger has his/her own unique creative which lets them invent their own way of blogging which has evolved into podcasting, photo-blogging or video blogging. Blogging is the best place to express yourself.

3. Blogging platform has a great feature called archiving which is somewhat like library where your all posts are kept in chronological order to which you can always revisit them whenever you want. It has helped me realized that I have learned many things and matured.

4. Blogging lets me have conversion with you. i.e., with people whom I have never made irrespective of race, religion, language, lifestyle and profession.

5. Another aspect of the conversations is to connect with others, which would simply be not possible otherwise. Blogging is discovery vehicle that introduce me to new people of my criteria I want. And very soon, you can build relationship of these, which has brought me in this beautiful blog.

6. Blogging is a tool because of which you can learn many new things, evolve yourself, build relationships and help others learn.

7. And no one can stop you from blogging, if you are interested.

How do you find time to do this? Are you always free?

This is one of the questions many people ask me. Those people have an opinion that people who blog are totally free and jobless J but it’s not true.

Many people are blogging apart from their main works, I am too an engineer student as well as student of NIIT. But Blogging is my passion. Somehow I manage to take time for it.

I normally dedicate 3 to 4 hours in a day to blog as well as to read others blog. It boils down to how well we manage our time.

Mind you, starting a blog is pretty easy but maintaining it is tough. We need to keep reading and update ourself with the latest happenings in our field.

Reading others blog? How to do you keep track of whose blog to read etc.

There are quite a few tools available on the web which would help one in managing this. For example, there is a site called Bloglines (there are numerous RSS/ATOM feed readers like this in the web. Google too also has one by name Google Reader.) Where we could register for free and just add the path of all the feeds of those blogs which you feel like reading. This way, you just need to login into one single site where you could read all posts from all the blogs of your choice. Easy isn’t it.

How do you know what and what not to blog?

These are few basic steps which I take care while blogging. Just see whether this would be of use to you.

1. I would suggest you stay away from blogging about your company or the project you do at present. I have read enough about those who have lost their jobs just because of blogging or cribbing about their company.

2. Be yourself. Don’t start blogging something for the sake of others. People are there to know what you personally feel about a situation or an issue.

3. Create your own style of bloggin or in other words try and be unique. I know it’s pretty though. Still no harm in giving a try.

How to handle a readers comments?

Go through all the comments and give importance to both type of comments i.e., Positive as well as Negative comments.

Getting a Positive comment is lucky thing and it is easy to handle it.

But Negative comment is also not a bad thing. It’s an indication of growth. It encourage discussions. Never flame the reader if he/she flames you. if you do then there might be great loss for you in terms of traffic.

Now, if any of you get thoughts about blogging for nanoseconds, I would consider this post has achieved its aim. What are you waiting for, be the first one to start because Sometimes Never Comes.

It doesn’t make any sense to me to make a file or folder without naming it. Why would I create a folder which is nameless but yeah if you have some evil plans like wanting to hide something from your family who aren’t geeks, why not try and hide it in some weird places in your computer but don’t forget where you placed them, tricks are always useful isn’t it.

So, I am going to share a simple trick which enable you to create a nameless file or folder i.e.,file or folder without a name in it.

Here’s the step to create it.

Just create a new folder and hold Alt key and type 255 on the number pad at the same time.

For laptop users, press Fn and hold Alt key and press the letter keys kii to make use of number pad

Your nameless folder is ready.

Another method

Just create a new folder and hold Alt Key and type 0160 on the numpad at the same time.

Reason - This puts an ASCII code instead of typically qwerty keys or say that they are using the special character which resembles ’space’.

But If you wanted to create another nameless file or folder in the same directory?

For this you will have to rename the file or folder with 2 space. Here’s the step involve to get it work.

Select file or folder and press F2.

Hold Alt key and type 0160 from numpad.

Release the Alt key, Now without doing anything else, again hold Alt key and type 0160.

Press enter and you will have second nameless file or folder in the same directory.

Repeat step3 to create as many nameless file or folder in the same directory.

Note:- I tried this tricks on windows XP and Home vista. The rest OS supports or not, I can’t say but you guys can help out if you can share your experience here.

Many frequent computer users suspend or hibernate their computer instead of turning off because it saves the state of your computer as it was in hibernation. It also reduce the startup time as it has to store only the state.

So how about about having a shortcut key for suspend or hibernate in your desktop or laptop? If you are interested then follow these simple methods:-

1. Right click on the empty area of your desktop.
2. Select New->Shortcut
3. In the “Type the location of the item” type “rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState”(without the quotes)
4. Click Next
5. Name (Suspend My Computer, for example)
6. Click finish.

Now you have a shortcut key for suspend on your computer. Congrats!!!

While browsing through the orkut community, I came across the discussion that folder can’t be name as Con. Then I started googling about Con and got some cool solution to it.

An Indian discovered that nobody can’t create a FOLDER anywhere named as “con“. This is something pretty cool….and unbelievable . At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn’t answer why this happened!!!

I am sure that many people still don’t know that they can’t create a Con folder in windows XP and in some other Operating System.

So Why cannot we create a folder by a name Con? What’s the reason behind it?

It’s pretty simple, Con is a reserved name from the early days from DOS, it stands for the “CONSOLE” I/O device, Since it is already used by the system. If we create one with some evil tricks then the system will get confused. There will be an ambiguity.

Check out other reserved words to understand what are all the reserved words using which you can’t create folders in windows.

Like Con, many other reserve words are there which we can’t create. They are

PRN - It stands for printer.

AUX - It stands for Auxiliary device.

COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9 - They stands for serial ports.

LPT1, LPT2, PRN - They stands for Parallel ports.

NUL - It stands for Bid Bucket.

Did I said that the Con folder can’t be created, what a big typo. Well friends, There’s a evil trick to create a Con folder. Here goes the evil tricks.

Open the Command prompt by Start->Run and type in cmd

Type MD\\.\\C:\CON

C is the drive path, you can change this drive to your own choice of path.

Now Open My Computer and browse through the path where you created the Con folder. surprising huh!!! yeah buddy, you have successfully created a Con folder.

Now try to delete the folder, it won’t get deleted by simple delete option. Better try this:-

To delete the folder, type RD\\.C:\CON

Another method to create Con folder without the use of the Dos.

Create a new folder. Name it Con and press Alt + 255 simultaneously.

Well Alt+255 stands for a blank character in ASCII so it allows you to use this folder name.

Note:- Actually you’ll have to press the number’s of the number pad or else it won’t work. That is, create a new folder, rename it Con but don’t press enter yet. Hold down Alt and type 255 on the number pad and then press enter. (for laptop users, press Fn key and press the letter keys k-i-i to make use of number pad).

The next time when someone asks the question that why can’t we create a folder by name Con, say with confidence that it is not true…

You already know about the full screen mode in YouTube video player that scales the current video to fill the entire screen.

The big problem in full screen mode in YouTube video player is that you can’t do anything else on the computer while the video is playing - you have to exit the full screen before initiating any other tasks.

There’s an excellent alternative to a full screen and that’s about auto resizing the video player to fit the browser window. When you resize the browser window, the dimensions of YouTube video player will change accordingly.

Here’s how you fit the YouTube video in the browser window.

Say a YouTube video url is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRDuCBogm38

To watch this clip in the resizable browser window without switching to full screen, just rewrite the above url as

http://www.youtube.com/v/YRDuCBogm38

In other words, just append the YouTube VIDEO ID to this URL www.youtube.com/v/VIDEO_ID and maximize your browser. You can then easily switch to other tabs, open new tabs, open new applications or do anything else while the YouTube clip is still playing in the maximum possible area.

So how is the trick???

I have already written a posts on How to hide floppy drive in your computer in my earlier posts.

Another trick is to hide computer drives in window XP. So this tips is very useful for home users, particularly for those who wants to hide/secure their important data from other users. You can hide any specific local drive or all drives(physical and removable) of the system and network drives also. By disabling the display of drives, you can safe your personal data from non-technical users on a single computer. The drive will not show up in My Computer, will not be accessible in command prompt , and won’t even show up in safe mode.

Follow the given steps to change the system drives registry value.

Note:- To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

1. Click Start button and type regedit in Run Option then press Enter.

2. Now Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If Explorer doesn’t exist then right click on Policies and select the key and name it Explorer.

Right-click on Explorer and then choose New and then DWORD Value.

Name the new value NoDrives and then double click on it to open its properties dialog box. click on Decimal for the Base Unit.

For specific drive use values (For example, for A, B, C, D, E, F, H drives, the values are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 respectively)

In this case we are trying to hide E drive, so we modify the value data box to 16.

The really cool thing about this trick is the fact that you can hide multiple drives by adding the numbers of the particular drives together. For example, if you want to hide drive E and drive G, you would type in number 80, which is 16+64.

Now if you want to hide all the system drives then modify value data to 3FFFFFF.

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after a changes to go into effect.

When you want to get your drives back, change the value of NoDrives to 0 or simply delete the value altogether or delete the DWORD item.

Again close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Note:- This trick also work in Home Vista.

Oh!!! C’mon don’t open that folder, you fucking asshole, Can’t i have privacy. That’s what I used to say to friends when they try to access my personal folder. But do you know what these morons do, after hearing my words, they get eager to see what the hell he keeps at that folder.

So I started googling whether there is a way to hide a folder in an easy way. I stumbled upon many tricks, some software related like folder hide are best but it cost money whereas i need it for free. So i continued my googling and at last I found this method which is best according to me till now.

So friends, Keep those prying eyes out of your file and folders and prevent unwanted people from reading your file.

This method involves the use of command prompt and built-in windows functions to change certain attributes of a file or folder. Once the attribute have been changed, the files can’t be seen by the system.

The reason I like this method is because it does not involve any third party software.

Caution! - Do not hide windows system files or folders. If a file windows need is hidden, a windows can’t find the file, then windows can become unstable and data can be damaged or lost.

Here’s how you can create a hidden folder in windows for free that’s pretty secure:-

1. Go to Start, Run and then type in CMD to open in command prompt window.

2. Now Navigate to the parent folder of the folder you want to hide. For example, I want to hide the folder in C:\test, so I would type in the following.

Cd C:\test

3. Now Type in the following command, replacing the word foldername with the name of the folder you want to hide.

attrib foldername +s +h

And that’s it. Your folder is completely hidden. It won’t show up in My Computer, it won’t show up if you browse via command prompt and it won’t show up if you select “Show all Hidden Files and Folders”.

If you want to un-hide the folder you simply follow the above steps, except now you will run this command:

attrib foldername -s -h

You’ll definitely need to remember which folder you have hidden as there is no easy way of determining what’s missing, so make sure you remember what you hide!

Note:- +h make the folder hidden and -s makes it system folder.

Drawback - Although this technique is the still best way of hiding folder from many other ways but this technique has one major drawback.

If you go to tools->folder option->View and Uncheck the “Hide Protected Operating System files” and click on “Apply” “OK” and hidden files become visible.

Solution - You can disable the Folder option with gpedit.msc

Follow this step - Go to start>run. Type in gpedit.msc->user configration\administrator templates\windows
componant\windows explorer-(right side window)-remove the folder options
menu item from the tool menu-DOUBLE CLICK AND DISABLE IT

So how is the trick, do you also hide folders like me. If you know other methods or tricks, please share here.
